Butterfly GardenWe were so happy to have two more kids join us in the Garden Club. The kids started by going down to the butterfly garden to plant "butterfly weed" seeds.
New Planters, New PlantsWe ran out of planter space pretty quickly. Over Easter break, Tom Chaleki doubled our space by building more planters. We got some more of that great garden dirt from Rose Hauling. The plants we've already planted are thriving in it. With the new planter space, we decided to plant the rest of the seeds we got from Southern Exposure. The kids planted lots of herbs, carrots, swiss chard, beets, and more.

Taking Care of the GardensEveryone was so surprised at how our gardens had grown. The strawberry plants had flowers and little green strawberries. The broccoli florets have started peaking out. And the lettuce is "huge"! The kids helped weed and thin out the radishes!! They were sad to get rid of perfectly good radish plants, but learned that it makes room for the remaining radishes to grow better.
Show and TellHugh was so nice to bring things in to show us. He brought a Praying Mantis egg sac, a slug, and a strawberry plant that had little strawberries growing - some of them were already turning red! Thanks Hugh!
Next WeekWe're planning to repot the plants we started in trays because they've outgrown their little containers. We're also planning to make a salad with our own homegrown organic salad (yum)! And of course more weeding and thinning.
Time is going by so fast! Just 3 sessions left. We still need to learn how to compost with worms! |
