What is an Insect?
September 20, 2013 - Another beautiful day for Garden Club! The weather started out cloudy, but soon brightened up. The gardeners ran or walked the Yellow Brick Road with Mrs. Regina, Mrs. Huelskoetter, Miss Morrison and Ms. Lingo. Then, everyone settled down to paint! Each gardener received one-quarter of an egg carton for creating his or her insect and then decorated it with paint and, if desired, glitter. The insect bodies look amazing! The three sections of the egg carton represent the head, thorax, and abdomen, or the three main body parts of any insect. Mrs. Regina taught the Clover Buds about the differences between insects (six legs) and other bugs, such as spiders (eight legs) and worms (no legs), and about how some insects act as pests, while others are beneficial. Ms. Lingo explored the campus with the Grizzly Gardeners, finding insects, and classifying them. Next week, we plan to attach legs, wings, antennae, and eyes to the egg carton insects. We also expect to plant vegetable seeds in the raised beds.
Crafting an Insect
The gardeners painted egg carton insect bodies. Creative designs abounded, and the children had a chance to mix their own paint colors from the subtractive primary colors: red, blue, and yellow. Thanks, Mrs. Paschal, for the paint!

Ordering Insects?
The Grizzly Gardeners took a look at some insects around the campus and classified them into Orders.
