Symbiotic Relationship of Plants and Animals
Today the kids learned about the symbiotic (beneficial) relationship of plants and animals. They learned that animals, people included, breath oxygen and expell carbon dioxide. Plants on the otherhand need carbon dioxide to thrive and give off oxygen. How great is that? They did a fun activity where half the kids were plants and the other half were animals. Every child had a bottle of bubbles. The animals blew bubbles while the plants held their breath. The plants could only breath when they burst a bubble. Then the animals had to hold their breath while the plants blew bubbles. Half way through, the two groups had to stand further apart. It took much longer to burst a bubble. This demonstrates the benefit of having plants and animals closer together. Tina, who is not only a Master Gardener, but also a nurse, explained to the kids how oxygen is taken in and transported throughout the body. And then how the body takes the carbon dioxide and expells it.
Cleaning up the ScarecrowsIt was time to collect our scarecrows and take them apart. It was all fun until thousands of stink bugs and other spiders fell out. Yikes!

Visiting the GardenIt was also time to clean up the gardens of all the summer annuals like basil, tomatoes, etc.
