The first day of Garden Club was absolutely gorgeous. We had a nice snack outside before starting. A big "thank you" to Mrs. Wagner for donating the ice pops!
Garden ClubThe vegetable garden was a mess after a summer of neglect! Before weeding, Mrs. Dart had the kids identify the different plants. They identified the herbs by smelling them first. Then they decided which would stay and which would go to the compost pile. It was hard work, but they did a great job! We are so lucky to have Maddox's mom, Mrs. Molly Crouch, helping with the club. Thank you Molly!
Worm TerrariumMrs. Dart led the kids in a discussion on how worms are beneficial to gardens. Then the kids had a great time building a worm terrarium. First they added stones and dirt. Then came the fun part - finding the worms! They found lots and lots of worms. The Jr. Master Gardener's helped too! When they were done, they added some veggies from the compost pile. Come visit the Worm Terrarium which is now located in the Kindergarten room.

The Grizzly GardenersThe older kids were introduced to the Junior Master Gardener (JMG) program and reviewed their new JMG books. They decided unanimously they wanted the group to be called the Grizzly Gardeners.
Regina tried to convince the kids that hamburgers come from plants (Yikes! What are they teaching the kids!) When they thought about it, it made sense - the buns are made from flour that comes from wheat, the beef comes from cows that feed on grass, hay, or grains, etc. Then they drew pictures of the beneficial things that come from plants - for example plants take in CO2 and give off oxygen, cotton can be made into fabric for clothes, etc. Cleaning Up the GardensThe JMGs made quick work of cleaning up their garden plots. They had fun looking for worms for the Worm Terrarium.
