Planning a New Garden Bed
April 4, 2014 - The gardeners enjoyed hearing from a special guest, Kody Kappes, who works in landscape design. Mr. Kappes talked with the gardeners about many variables he considers before planting and the types of problems to be solved. For example, he considers how big plants will grow, so that they do not grow into power lines or sidewalks and foundations. Mr. Kappes talked about textures and colors in a garden. He took questions and comments from the gardeners. A big thank-you to Mr. Kappes for sharing his expertise with the Garden Club! The gardeners next had the opportunity to apply what they learned and examined an area around the Grymes Grizzly to create a landscape design.
Spend a lot of Time LookingMr. Kappes spends a lot of time looking at a site. He converses with the client about what he or she would like to do with the area, and makes some sketches. In similar fashion, the gardeners considered the area around the Grymes Grizzly, noting total area, sunlight, irrigation potential, foot traffic, and fire department access.

Designing Around the Grymes GrizzlyEach gardener received a coloring sheet showing the entire area in which the Grymes Grizzly is situated. The gardeners were asked to sketch
landscaping using trees, bushes, and flowers, placing taller specimens toward the back and shorter specimens to the front. |
