The Second SessionFriday, April 15
We welcomed 2 more kids to the Grymes Garden Club. The more the merrier! While having a snack, the kids came up with their own Garden Club rules. Last week, the kids had some special requests to plant strawberries, beets and swiss chard. The folks at Southern Exposure are amazing and provided us with plants and seeds for all three. Thank you! |

Strawberry PlantsIt was a beautiful Spring afternoon and we spent most of our time outside planting. We started by planting strawberry plants. Some of the kids even had flowers on theirs. They learned that's where the fruit will grow. Taylor explained to everyone how strawberry plants propogate. She and Ben learned about it in Science class. She explained that strawberry plants send off runners (ground creeping stems) and then grow another plant with leaves and roots in another location.
HerbsWe planted some herb plants including oregano and thyme.
VegetablesThe kids were clamouring to plant beets, apparently a favorite vegetable of some. Who could refuse? So we planted beet seeds in the raised bed and accidentally planted the swiss chard too (oops!).

Starting Seeds IndoorsTina explained that different plants need to be planted at different times due to the temperature. Some plants like the cold and others need it to be warmer. You can start seeds indoors for the plants that like to be planted in warmer weather. We planted marigolds, zinneas, sunflowers, and green peppers. We brought the trays into Mrs. Wagner's room where Avery and Jackson will make sure they are watered. We picked a nice sunny spot where they would thrive.
The kids were disappointed to hear that it was already too late to plant peas, but we agreed to try and start the garden club earlier next year. |

Watering Our GardenMother nature has been kind. It's rained every couple of days this week and there is rain in the forecast again on Saturday. The plants just needed a little bit of water. The water hose almost reached (ooops again!). The kids did a great job watering from a can.

Next SessionWe won't have the Garden Club next week because there's no school. The next session will be on Friday, April 29th. Tina will be bringing in her worm bin and talking about worm composting. She's going to create a bin for Grymes and the Jr. K class will be taking care of it.
