A Time to Plant, and a Time to Pluck up...

May 23, 2014 - The gardeners could not have asked for a more perfect day for finishing out the spring session.  Mrs. Regina, Mrs Tina, Mrs. Sherman and Ms. Lingo were on hand to assist in the study of fruits and to help the gardeners harvest the spinach, lettuce, and kale from the raised garden beds.  A big thank-you to all of our volunteers, especially Mrs. Regina and Mrs. Tina, who drive some distance every Friday to share their time, talents, and love of gardening with the gardeners, and who make Grymes Garden Club fun possible!

Fruits Have Seeds

Mrs. Regina brought washed and cut fruits, so that the gardeners could dissect them and determine which ones have seeds.  Mrs. Regina explained that many foods that we think of as vegetables are, in actuality, fruits.  The gardeners created a list of fruits that are thought of as vegetables, including cucumber, avocado, and tomato.  After opening their samples of fruits, the gardeners enjoyed them as a healthy snack and set aside the seeds to see which would germinate.

Spring Harvest

The gardeners were surprised by the quantity of leafy greens springing up in the raised garden beds.  Each gardener was given a bag and allowed to fill it with spinach, lettuce, and kale.  The cabbages and strawberries have been left to grow, so feel free to stop by and check their progress over the summer!
