First Day
September 13, 2013 - What a gorgeous start to the fall Garden Club. The weather was perfect for working and playing outdoors. The gardeners cheerfully cleared the raised beds of the tremendous quantity of weeds that had grown during the rainy summer. All sorts of surprises from last year were found in the raised beds, as well as some bug guests. The children went on to plant lettuce and kohlrabi in one half of the garden. Next week, they will plant some seeds in the other half. What kinds? Wait and see! Mrs. Regina gave out seed packets for the gardeners to take home and try planting. Mrs. Tina showed the children effective methods for pulling weeds. Parent volunteers and faculty joined in the fun: Rebekah Lingo, volunteer Grizzly Gardeners leader; Regina Howell and Tina Chaleki, volunteers and Master Gardeners; Donald Brewster, parent volunteer; Hanna Morrison, Teresa Huelskoetter, and Evelyn Chaleki, faculty. Thanks for coming out!
Weeding
What is a weed? A plant whose virtues have never been discovered.

Planting
Each gardener had a chance to look at his or her seeds and compare them with those of others. Some seeds are round and bumpy, while others are flat and smooth. Some are large and some are very small. We learned that seeds are usually planted three seed-widths deep. Starter (little) plants are planted by removing them from their containers, tickling the roots, and placing in a prepared hole, sized to allow the roots to be surrounded and lightly covered back up with soil to tuck it in.

Critter Corner
Lots of critters. We will learn more about them soon! Can you identify any of these organisms?
