Plant Parts
Today the kids learned about the different parts of a plant. First they brainstormed over the different parts of a person such as bones, skin, digestive system, circulatory system, etc. Surprisingly, plants and people have a lot in common.
Seed PartsThe kids opened up a bean seed and examined it. First they took off the seed coat which was like our skin. Then they looked for the embryo. The embryo is the part of the seed that grows into a new plant. The Cotyledon(s) are the two parts of the the bean that protect and feed the embryo. The kids did an experiment. They put a bean and an embryo in plastic bags with paper towels to see if the embryo can survive without the other bean parts.

Flower PartsRegina brought in lilly blooms and other smaller flowers for the kids to dissect. They learned all the plant parts while taking them apart.
|
Plant Parts DiagramThe kids were given a worksheet and they colored each plant and seed part as they learned it.
