HarvestingWe had another gorgeous day for gardening! Regina Howell, master gardener, enjoyed working with the kids so much she came back :-). We hope she'll become a regular. The kids were so excited to see leaves poking out of the ground from the seeds that we planted last week. We harvested the kale and tomatoes, but decided to leave the green peppers for next week.
CrittersWe found more critters in our garden! Jackson found a cool chrysalis that was moving. He took it home for safe keeping. Hopefully this week he'll report back on it.

Thank You Tree And Leaf Farm!We are so grateful to Tree and Leaf Farm for donating a flat of fabulous plants. We planted Small Nappa Cabbage, Maiching (a small Tatsoi), and Little Gem Romaine. Zach and Georgia are the parents of Eion in Jr. K. Tree and Leaf Farm is a sustainable vegetable farm located in Unionville, Virginia. Since 1998 they have been dedicated to tending the balance of our farm’s natural ecosystem. They sell their produce at the Falls Church and Dupont Circle farmer's markets. Click on the Tree and Leaf logo to visit their website.
Planting Lettuce and CabbagesBefore we planted the plants from Tree and Leaf Farm we talked about the difference between lettuce and cabbage. Did you know that the cabbage is in the same family as broccoli, brussel sprouts, and kale? We also talked about the different parts of the plant that we eat. We eat the leaves of the lettuce and cabbages, the roots of the radishes and carrots, and the fruit of the green pepper and tomatoes that we planted.
