We are excited to announce that this autumn the Grymes Garden Club is implementing the Junior Master Gardener (JMG) program Level 1. The mission of the Junior Master Gardener program is "to grow good kids by igniting a passion for learning, success and service through a unique gardening education." The Junior Master Gardener program is an international youth gardening program of the University Cooperative Extension network. JMG engages children in novel, "hands-on" group and individual learning experiences that provide a love of gardening, develop an appreciation for the environment, and cultivate the mind. JMG also inspires youths to be of service to others through service learning and leadership development projects, and rewards them with certification and recognition. Click here for more information on the program. The Junior Master Garden program Level 1 is recommended for students in Grades 3 - 5. Because none of our upper school students have been certified for Level 1, we will open the session to Grades 3 - 8 and tailor our discussions and activities appropriately.
We are excited about this program and believe it will provide more structure to the Grymes Garden Club. JMG follows a defined curriculum which mirrors that of the adult Master Gardener Program. Through the leadership of our two master gardener instructors, Regina Howell and Tina Chaleki, the kids will learn:
Because this is a new program for us, we do not know how long it will take for the kids to get certified as JMGs. We hope to know better at the end of the Fall session.
- Plant Growth and Development - participants will learn how plants grow and make our world a better place.
- Soils and Water - participants will get their hands dirty and learn how soil and water are important to plants and all living things.
- Ecology and Environmental Horticulture - participants will get the big picture of how people, plants and animals all depend upon each other and how they can help take care of our environment.
- Insects and Diseases - participants will find out what's bugging them and their plants by exploring the world of insects and plant disease.
- Landscape Horticulture - participants will learn how to create and take care of beautiful gardens, and how to attract birds, insects, and other creatures to their backyards or neighborhoods.
- Fruits and Nuts - participants will learn about many different kinds of fruits and nuts, and make fruit smoothies, raisins, and even peanut butter!
- Vegetables and Herbs - participants will learn to grow many different kinds of vegetables and herbs and how to cook them in some yummy dishes.
- Life Skills and Career Exploration - participants will learn more about themselves, their friends and their school, and discover how to make plans for the future.
Because this is a new program for us, we do not know how long it will take for the kids to get certified as JMGs. We hope to know better at the end of the Fall session.
***Please note that Kim Dart, Grymes Kindergarten teacher, will be continuing the popular Grymes Garden Club for grades K-2***
We hope you'll join us as we explore this new program!
