Grymes Grizzly Gardeners and Clover Buds Garden Club
Grymes Memorial School is nestled amongst the rolling green hills of the Virginia Piedmont, a region notable for its fertile land. To take advantage of its location, and to help kids learn about gardening, a group of parents, teachers, and administrators decided to start an after school Garden Club. Participants plant and tend the school garden, eat what they grow, have fun getting dirty, and share their love of gardening with the school community.
The Garden Club consists of the Clover Buds, for children in Kindergarten through 2nd grades; and the Grizzly Gardeners, for children in 3rd through 8th grades. The Grizzly Gardeners are participants in the Junior Master Gardener Program through 4-H and Texas A&M University.
Regina Howell and Tina Chaleki, Master Gardeners in Louisa, Virginia, will be teaching the children about plants, pests, and other joys of gardening. Regina Howell, avid gardener, is a retired Kindergarten teacher and, in addition to assisting with the Grizzly Gardeners, will be leading the Clover Buds group. Tina Chaleki has gone to training on how to grow a school garden and will bring her extensive knowledge of growing just about any garden plant to the club. Rebekah Lingo, a former science teacher, photographer, and current Grymes parent volunteer, will be leading the Grizzly Gardeners in their work to become certified JMG Junior Master Gardeners.
