Designing an Ideal Backyard
March 28, 2014 - After examining the cabbage plants and strawberry plants placed in the raised beds a week ago, the gardeners spent some time running or walking along the Yellow Brick Road. They enjoyed a snack of apples and settled in to hear about the types of work landscape designers do. Mrs. Regina gave the gardeners an example of designing a backyard to contain both a swimming pool and a football field. The gardeners formed small groups and, working together, they designed their ideal yard to contain a field, a swimming pool, plantings, and whatever else the children wished. Wonderfully creative designs were on display!
What to ConsiderWhen designing outdoor spaces, placement of the larger elements must be considered. In the example Mrs. Regina gave, the students had to determine how to keep the swimming pool accessible, while keeping the football out of the water during playtime!

Working Together to Make a PlanEach group, led by an experienced Garden Club member, discussed which elements belong where in the ideal backyard. Once they reached consensus, the group members drew and colored in the features on a large piece of paper.
